Red River Valley & Western Railroad Transportation Specialist (Conductor/Engineer) in Breckenridge, Minnesota

TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST Red River Valley & Western Railroad is seeking a full-time year-round Transportation Specialist to work as a contributing member of a train crew (either as operator of locomotive or as a conductor/brake person); switching freight cars and making up trains in yards or on-line. This position reports directly to the Manager of Rail Operations. Essential Job Duties Carry out specific instructions detailing a train s route and specific movements. Plan and perform setouts and pick-ups, switching and service of on-line industries. Plan and anticipate moves. Handles the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and must be able to lift out coupling device. Observes, interprets and relays signals and other indications affecting movement of a train, i.e. track flags, block and interlocking and other fixed signals. Signals crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals, or radio to indicate when to start, stop, backup, set or release air brakes. Perform proper air brake tests as required by FRA and railroad operating rules. Inspect rolling stock for defects and evidence of wear including wheels, journals, brake rigging and safety appliances. Perform daily locomotive inspections as required by FRA and railroad rules. Fills out forms including, but not limited to, track warrants, bulletins and wheel reports. All reports are to be clear and legible. Must work assigned hours (some shifts may run approximately up to 12 hours) and may be required to be away from home for extended periods of time. Must be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible action as required. Conduct job briefings. This is considered a hazardous position requiring constant mental awareness and ability to react immediately to situations which may arise. Must be able to make good decisions under stressful conditions. Must be able to handle emergency situations; including operating fire extinguishers as well as be able to apply first aid techniques. Assist when required, in operation of work trains and to assist with re-railing cars where required. Monitor track to detect obstructions and to anticipate problems as required by federal or company rules. Use personal safety apparel and safety equipment as necessary. Assist, when required, in Maintenance of Way and Car Repair positions.
