Job Title:  Laboratory Chemist

Purpose of Position:

The APS Filters Laboratory performs testing related to the Avon respiratory protection products. This includes supporting production of filters and research and development towards innovative new respiratory protection products. The Laboratory Chemist supports production and research and development by performing breakthrough measurements of toxic gases and simulants. They will use their knowledge of chemistry and chemical analytical methods to support the safety, accuracy, and efficiency of testing performed in the laboratory.

 

Essential Duties and/or Functions:

  • Perform gas protection time testing on filters and sorbent materials to support production and research & development
  • Perform calibration related activities for various instruments including GC, IR, chemiluminescence, electrochemical, and mass flow units.
  • Prepare chemicals and agents for testing and neutralize reagents and waste
  • Perform analytical measurements on materials, including FTIR
  • Work with various toxic chemicals and gases, solvents, acids, and bases, complying with Safety Datasheet requirements for safe handling
  • Make recommendations on gas detector and other instrument decisions with respect to analytical techniques and chemistry
  • Participate in the use of Statistical Process Control charts, performing control measurements and identifying out of control conditions
  • Collaborate with scientific staff and Laboratory Systems Engineer to create and update procedures for testing, inventory, and safety.
  • Demonstrate professional communication through verbal and written reports on test data generated including charts and graphs as necessary to effectively communicate the information
  • Know and understand military and commercial filter specifications, including test conditions and quality limits for filter media and filters
  • Investigate chemical compatibility of materials and instrument components
  • Support production and R&D team with knowledge and research of chemical reactions and interactions
  • Learn all applicable laboratory quality control procedures and policies 
  • Perform laboratory tasks (i.e. housekeeping, washing glassware, minor maintenance), acquire samples and perform analytical test using proper analytical methods and various laboratory instrumentation, perform physical tests (i.e. dust emission, particle size distribution, moisture content, breathing resistance)
  • Support quality, production, and engineering with non-routine testing, research of specifications and procedures, assist with test plans, generate work orders, and suggest proper tests
  • Actively participate in the lab SQUID (Safety, Quality, Utilization, Inventory, and Delivery) meetings maintaining the assigned SQUID metric section, reporting out in meetings
  • Database entry of test results
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field 
  • Proficient in math; including algebra, trigonometry, and statistics
  • Knowledge of chemistry and chemical analytical techniques, background with the use of FTIR and GC preferred
  • Proficient in common MS Office software (Word, Excel, Office 365, Teams)
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work in a self-directed environment
  • Troubleshooting skills and a mechanical aptitude
