Job Summary:

In partnership with the Health System, the Outpatient Registered Dietitian is responsible for educating patients in the bariatric center and the diabetes center. This position is split between two days per week in the Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown Bariatric Center and three days per week in the Diabetes Center.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assess patient's understanding of disease process; chronic complications; standards of care and current areas requiring clinical intervention via interview and self-assessment and/or medical record and assists patient to set self-care goals to improve disease management.

  • Provide group and individual education; support groups; implements interventions within their scope of practice, such as medical nutrition therapy, self-blood glucose monitoring, medication/injectable, and insulin management as needed.

  • Works with physicians and other providers to identify the diabetes management needs of patients/families. Also works with physicians/clinical staff who treat diabetes patients.

  • Identifies, supports and provides continuing education to outpatient office clinicians who are leaders in maintaining proficiency in the management and education of diabetes patients.

  • Acts as a resource to program staff, nursing and ancillary department staff.

  • Participate in bariatric quality meetings as part of an active multidisciplinary team

  • Strong communication skills with bariatric surgical team

  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways and works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of a wide variety of factors.

  • Ensures compliance to the National Standards for DSMES to maintain ADA recognition/AADE accreditation.

  • Oversees the planning, implementation, evaluation and quality improvement of the DSMES services.

  • Ensures the DSMES services are evidence-based.

  • Ensures DSMES services are designed to meet the population needs.

Qualifications:

  • Registered Dietitian

  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) will need to be obtained within first two years of employment.

  • Appropriate professional licensure/registration required.

  • Bachelor’s degree
