Description:

Provides compassionate patient care in a general surgery/office setting to include communication with patients, families and physicians. Assists with procedures and patient care tasks as needed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Possesses knowledge and understanding of physical and emotional processes in the surgical patient.

• Initiates patient’s visit with patient assessment and vital signs; prepares patients for examinations.

• Excels at providing outstanding compassionate care and consistently expresses awareness and sensitivity to patients needs.

• Assists in communication and education of patients and family members.

• Communicates in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner with physicians, pharmacies and hospital departments such as laboratory, scheduling and the operating room.

• Promptly reviews phone messages and responds to patient concerns, answers questions and provides support.

• Efficiently and calmly handles emergency situations

• Exhibits excellent organizational skills and consistently screens and follows-up on patient test results; assists in tracking patient follow-up visits; promptly notifies physician of any abnormalities.

• Assists with procedures and patient care tasks as needed.

• Effectively processes specimens for laboratory and pathological evaluation.

• Competently performs basic tasks such as suture removal, splinting and casting.

• Coordinates patient care needs, which may include but are not limited to consultative visits, ancillary service visits, social work consultation and financial liaison consults.

• Coordinates clinic/OR schedules with Iowa Ortho staff and physicians and assists in surgery as applicable.

• Obtains Prior Authorizations as appropriate for surgeries.

• Gathers patient data including radiological exams and pathologic, laboratory, and radiological reports; diligently performs appropriate documentation in the medical record.

• Assist patients with medically necessary insurance forms, family leave paperwork and other pertinent documentation.

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (RN or BSN). Maintains BCLS certification at the health care provider level.

EXPERIENCE: Experience in a clinic setting preferred. Surgical experience in the operating room, recovery room or surgical ward helpful. Experience with Meditech preferred. Orthopaedic background with casting experience extremely beneficial

LICENSURE: Current license the State of Iowa required.
