Guthrie Trauma Registrar Abstractor-Trauma Center-Full Time in PA, United States

Position Summary: Collaborates with the Trauma Administration to maintain a comprehensive, high‐quality, computerized registry of the trauma patient population, in accordance with the established standards of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, (PTSF) and in conjunction with the standards and policies of the Robert Packer Hospital. Responsible for generation, analysis, and submission of data reports from the registry. Trauma registrars are essential for accurate and timely data reporting to internal and external clients to optimize the care of injured patients and therefore maintain consistent trauma center accreditation status. Education, License & Cert: Registered Health Information Technician Degree or Certified Professional Coder Certification preferred. Associates degree in related field is preferred. Certified Specialist in Trauma Registries is preferred but must be completed within 2 years of hire. The following must be completed within one year of employment per PTSF standards: • PTSF Basic Registry Course • ATS Trauma Registry Course or other equivalent courses • Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine AIS 2005 Course Experience: Previous coding or trauma registry experience is preferred. High School graduate. Minimum of Associate Degree in health‐related field or equivalent work experience of at least two years or with strong emphasis on data integrity and analysis is preferred. Medical terminology is essential. Trauma experience, AIS/ISS, ICD‐9/ICD‐10 coding familiarity is highly recommended. Proficiency in utilizing computers is essential. Previous Registry/Report Writing experience preferred. Demonstrates strong analytical skills; strong communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills; excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize requests and assignments; self‐directed with initiative to function independently as needed; computer skills in word processing; (Word, Excel, etc ) and data management. Essential Functions: 1. Ability to multi‐task and prioritize work in accordance with changing deadlines. Including the ability to overcome objectives and manage projects to a close. Demonstrates effective leadership, time management, flexibility, and priority setting. 2. Effectively communicates with all members of the Trauma System including administration, providers, nursing and all other multidisciplinary Performs basic data collection of demographics, and coding of clinical and follow‐up data from all sources into trauma registry database. Interacts with physicians, nurses, and other members of the trauma team and trauma patients to perform trauma registry functions. Will keep registry current within 60 days of patient discharge. 3. Determines appropriateness of patient entry into the Trauma Registry based on guidelines Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation guidelines. 4. Provides high quality data entry by abstraction of required state and national trauma data elements from the patient chart in real time and retrospectively. 5. Participates in quality assurance, data validation, and improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to PTSF set standards. 6. Understands mapping concepts and validates mapping of registry software for TQIP, NTDB, and the state. 7. Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program Manager or Trauma Registry vendor when appropriate. 8. Maintains patient confidentiality including confidentiality of sensitive hospital performance improvement information. 9. Participates in Trauma Performance Improvement and PTSF Committee meetings including 8 hours per year of continuing education as required by the PTSF. 10. Reports data in formats such as excel and/or power point for both internal and external consumption (includes statistical, clinical, and research data) team members. Other Duties: 1. Travel for this position is sometimes required. 2. Participation in community, local, state and national trauma activities is required. 3.
